Win a ticket to mesh!

Andrew: As one of the meshs organizers, I can tell you it would be great if it was a money maker but, truth be told, it has never been that. We keep doing it because its satisfying to create something that we hope offers value to the community.

As for the change in format, it was a decision we made to refresh mesh even though we had more attendees than ever last year and received great feedback.

Any product that doesnt evolve risks getting stale, and its always better to make changes when times are good as opposed to being forced to do it because the situation has gone bad.

And, yes, Jon Lax is cool. :)

cheers, Mark

Infographichs, just like videos, reach the kind of audience who are more graphics-oriented in terms of learning. But you have to make sure that your infographic is not only interesting but also crystal clear. I see a lot of disastrous infographics out there that only serve to confuse the audience.

Mesh is a money maker now. Prove me wrong.

Early in Meshs career (when I attended) it almost felt like DX3 did this year--- new, exciting, happy to gather the right people in the right place at the right time. Cool topics, engaging discussion and more. Has that time passed? Prove me wrong.

The networking was amazing (at that stage in my career), the swag was great, the event was fun.

This new format-- is it an attempt for the conference to find itself again? To get back some cred? Or is it one of the final attempts to make ton of cash? Who knows. Maybe Ill be proven wrong?

Jon Lax is cool.

Social Video - Infographic

Good point. I assume you are talking primarily about Facebook? Like AOL of days gone by - not really the Net is it?

The privilege of using thgeir app is offset by ads and whatever tracking/push/notification they deem fit. If you read the user agreement you would probably never go to the site?

The net is turning into TV without the benefit of production, editors, producers nor writers. It is what the folks want and what the folks want ... they will get. I predict it will only grow and grow and grow.

Social Video - Infographic

Although I acknowledge the current growth, Im not so sure about the future growth. Call me hypersensitive to privacy (having been in the industry for 14 years, I know a thing or two about technology), but I dont like that these apps automatically broadcast the fact youre watching them to your network. You dont really know the content youre going to watch and its an huge assumption that you want this shared which is a prerequisite to watching. Ive personally stopped watching these videos entirely, and starting to actively dislike them cluttering up my news feeds. If I want a dose of drivel Ill visit break or liveleak or whatever the flavour of the moment is. I stand to be challenged, but sense is that others will likely find the same over time?

Its about passion. What sets mesh apart is the passion of its speakers, of its attendees, and its culture. Its about web done smartly, and with great passion. Thats the mantra that Ive lived for my 16 years of working online.

The fact that I have two of Weinbergers books on my office shelves as well as Geists, that I hosted my very first blog on Winers Frontier platform, and that I not only nosh at Caplanskys but spread the word about its fabulous food means that I truly cant imagine a year without Mesh. :)

Would just love a ticket!

Win a ticket to mesh!

The best description of Mesh Ive heard was Mesh is like summer camp for marketers. It really is, although it has grown in size over the last few years. The hallway conversations and opportunities to re-connect with friends and colleagues is invaluable. We all lead incredibly busy lives and have social media tools to stay in touch, but it feels like the one time of the year we are all able to get back in touch IRL is during Mesh.

Im incredibly interested in hearing Dave Winer talk this year, hes an Internet visionary and, while I follow his blog and Twitter, the opportunity to hear him speak in person is something Id really like to experience... so I hope I win the free ticket :)

Win a ticket to mesh!

I volunteered at Mesh way back when and it was a great conference with an always stellar line up of speakers. This time around I have a better idea of who I am, what I want to learn and I know that Mesh would be a great place to continue that never ending dance.

A Mesh can be defined as any of the open spaces in a net or network and to me those spaces are where the people fit through on their way to be informed, connected, and entertained. Those meshes are the filters that take the infinite sea of information we are continuously creating and makes that torrent into something we can understand and use in our every day lives. It can be unearthing that great video that makes your day, learning about what is going on on the other side of the globe, or just meeting a new friend or reconnecting with a long lost one, that is how these meshes continue to reshape the world around us.

While I would love to listen to Andy Carvin talk about engaging the tribes at NPR or hear Stuart Lombards stories about the shark filled world of VCs what I look forward to the most is the random run-ins, the unique views you didnt expect, and the stories that give you an understanding you didnt know you needed that will come from Mesh. You cant plan for the unexpected but when you are around the types of people that Mesh attracts you have to be open to the possibilities. That is what I seek to experience and learn if given the chance to take in Mesh this year.

A really good example for me is the Birthday Card I received from Starbucks that gave me a free coffee of my choice. I Facebooked, Tweeted and talked about it and everybody agreed it was very cool. I much it cost them? About 5 dollars + printing card + stamp.

Small follow-up.

Just received my Final Notice to do the survey and get a chance to win a $200 Gift Card. I did the survey when I got the first email. Oh, and no emails inbetween the first and the Final Notice.

Well, I guess Dupe/Elim is not found within the walls of the Rogers Castle either?

They have my email - cause they asked for it at the end of the survey and obviously have it because I am a customer are received the survey. Do a merge/purge? Nope. Cool.

Five Questions for Peter Mosley

Doesnt sound like too much of a self-serving post. Just wondering whos asking the questions and whos answering them though. Maybe I just fell off the turnip truck I suppose, but whats the message here? Net-work is the result of Net-Effort or Net-Play. Its all relevant to what your market demands are and what your Network can supply that will fulfill those demands.

You cant supply horses to the Aerospace Industry unless you know some inside information about their latest experiment on horses in space.
Marketing is so simple even a fifth grader can do it in his sleep.

Lemonade stand on a hot day in front of a captive audience! Put your money on the table and well pour you a glass!

FREE shit always demands more FREE shit and if you give something away it sets the price and value of your product because FREE Advice is usually worth what you paid for it!

Anyone who cant understand the difference between public property and private property shouldnt be let out of the public institution they were housed in prior to posting their information on a public social platform. Nobody asked anyone to make their private information or their personal stuff public and then expect everyone to protect and share their privacy at the same time.
When you get published phone numbers, expect phone calls from anyone with a phone book, they arent copyright publications are they?
Public-ation=public property! Read it. Share it. Rewrite it. Words, music, videos, posts, comments and any other social platform publication makes your personal posting of anything Public Property by the very act of Publishing it. All that is required to take ownership of it is to change one letter or note and it has a new author. Just ask God about His Book if you dont believe my post!

Regardless of whether piracy is right or wrong, it is not theft. It does not deprive the owner of their propery. Piracy is the illegal copying of something that does not belong to you. That is not theft.

My beef with the whole online piracy to do, is that businesses are suing for purported damages that in no way reflect the actual loss that they have suffered. If pirates were held accountable for the actual damages they inflicted, then I would have less issue with IP laws meant to protect creaters.

If you want an actual insightful view of piracy, check out the owner of Valve. They view piracy as a customer service issue, not a theft issue. And their response to piracy is earning them money instead of causing frivilous and bullying lawsuits.

Well put Mr. Mosely. I have heard the following arguments:

1) Posting songs, books, movies etc., works more as advertisement. In the end folks will likely buy your stuff if they get to sample it for free initially.

REPLY: Posting your stuff to the internet HAS indeed proven to work, BUT this is the choice of the originating author; if they have not chosen to promote their stuff in that manner, then you are stealing.

2) Internet theft has no real impact on the economy; the folks who steal stuff have likely already exhausted their budget on stuff, and would not likely buy it anyway.

REPLY: If you run out of money, you get NO more stuff. My mother and father taught me this when I was 5.

3) Copyright laws are ludicrous, they do not fit with the current technology and the distribution options these technologies provide. We need to establish a whole new economy that arranges for the compensation of creative people that does not rely on purchasing their product!

Absolutely. But not laughing. Call it a cautionary tale. If you work or use a tool - start with reading the manual. If it is a complex tool - say a guitar, do not go back to the store and complain cause it dont sound right. Take lessons.

With computers, which I believe most folks either want to, or have to use, take a course, learn something about the basics. I have watched someone take 45 minutes trying to figure out how to make a border in Excel. This is hardly laughable.

My point was twofold. One the stats are skewed. Two we are using very powerful tool where we have - at best - rudimentary knowledge.

The line from the help desk comes to mind ... My cup holder on my computer doesnt work.

I totally agree. I work for customer support and, say, they have to go to mail.--theirdomain--.com
They normally type it in google search field. and surely enough this is not popping up in search. :)

Same with browser - just a tiny fraction knows what a BROWSER is, leave alone what type of it they have! They click on The Internet and type their domains in google.

But on the other hand I have no idea about their field of expertize (im sur eyou do not too), so it is not fair to laugh about lack of knowledge in our field, right?

Hey Glen,

Its much more than that im afraid. You can easily get your site indexed in google by following those guidelines, but if you are trying to rank for a specific keyword then there is much more work to be done.

Authority backlinking and high quality content (1000+ word articles) are going to be the mainstay in SEO and you should try to keep it that me.

Yeah we dig Sean! Tweeted and posted all over the place on that.

The other thing that I believe makes something go viral is relevance. I being a Canadian drummer found huge resonance immediately.

Google makes their case for relevance - I think it is paramount in something going viral - whether it be a breaking news story or something weird and whacky by vertical category.

The other thing that I believe makes something go viral is relevance. I being a Canadian drummer found huge resonance immediately.

Google makes their case for relevance - I think it is paramount in something going viral - whether it be a breaking news story or something weird and whacky by vertical category.

Viral Marketing Mistakes for Small Businesses

We believe people are compelled to share content (viral) for 7 reasons:

1. It makes them laugh.
2. It is amazing or unbelievable.
3. It positively effects them emotionally.
4. It negatively effects them emotionally.
5. It is something not covered in the mainstream media.
6. It is provacative, but safe for work.
7. It makes them ponder the big questions in life.

We recently posted a blog article on this in recognition of Sean Quigleys recent successes for his Video Little Drummer Boy. Check out the posting on our blog titled, Overnight Viral YouTube Success for Sean Quigley. http://goo.gl/AHgzw

Social Media - Only Build To Own

I agree 100% with what is being said here. There is a culture in these businesses that has them turn there backs on the very customers and users that made them successful. This is why fame and fortune for many of these businesses is so fleeting. If you want to create a sustainable online business build your own quality website online presence. Use your own personal brand and keep quality content and customer service as your number one priority.

Developing the Creative Craft XVI

I would have to agree with de Bono - I think as individuals we are better at generating ideas. Group situations can provide too many opportunities to get sidetracked, and people dont always feel comfortable sharing ideas if they believe that others may think the ideas stupid - even though in brainstorming, one stupid idea can lead to some really brilliant ones.
